- Urine sample collection first thing in the morning is preferred. However, a specimen collected from urine passed any time of the day will be accepted.
- Please Note: Urine samples collected after drinking large amounts of liquid may result in a diluted sample and could affect the results.
- Label the specimen containers with your name, date, and time of collection prior to passing urine.
- Give any samples to the nursing staff or deliver them to the most convenient lab or depot, within 2 hours of collection. If transportation is delayed, place the sample in the fridge.

Glucose Tolerance Tests (GTT)
The glucose tolerance test is a method to judge how well your body is able to metabolize glucose. The test takes approximately 2 hours, and may be conducted in your doctor’s office or in a hospital, clinic, or laboratory.
Patients are advised to fast overnight for 8 to 12 hours prior to the test, and advised not to restrict carbohydrate intake 3 days before the test. Smoking and chewing gum is not allowed, only small sips of water.
A phlebotomist will start by drawing a small amount of blood. After the first blood sample is taken, you will drink a liquid containing glucose. Your blood will be drawn several more times at regular intervals after drinking the glucose solution.
You should not eat or drink anything until the test is completed, and you typically will remain on site for the duration of the test. You may wish to take a snack with you for after the test.
Fasting Tests
Some blood tests (for example lipogram, fasting glucose, fasting cholesterol, PTH tests) will require you to fast beforehand.
In these cases, your doctor will instruct you not to eat or drink anything, except water, for 8 to 12 hours leading up to the test.
Smoking and chewing gum is not allowed.
Please be aware that these tests can take up to 2 hours to complete.
